Population
(in '000)

Males     - 1553.32
Females - 1343.54
Total      - 2896.86
Rural     -  2149.29
Urban    -   747.57

Saharanpur is one of those districts of U.P. which have adverse female ratio. In fact, the female ratio in Saharanpur is in alarming state.  Also, Saharanpur has got pre-dominantly rural / semi urban areas. Against 2149.29 thousand rural population, Saharanpur has got only 747.57 thousand urban population.

Literacy

Males   -    897.58
Female -    546.44

Being a pre-dominantly rural district, the literacy level in Saharanpur is quite low even though 60 years have already elapsed after independence. There are many social, economic and historical causes for this phenomenon.

Tehsil (5)

Saharanpur
Deoband
Nakur
Behat
Rampur Maniharan

Rampur Tehsil is the latest creation.  Hardwar used to be a Tehsil of Saharanpur before 28 Dec. 1988 but it is a separate district now. Rampur Tehsil was created on ___________.  A Tehsil is a sub-division of a district under the jurisdiction of SDMs who take care of administrative, criminal revenue and recovery with the assistance of Tehsildars and other members of the team.

Development Blocks (11)

Baliakheri
Punwarka
Muzaffarabad
Sadhauli Kadeem
Sarsawa
Nakur
Gangoh
Nagal
Deoband
Rampur
Nanauta

For 'efficient' administration and to 'ensure proper growth and development' of the District, it was thought prudent to divide the entire geographical area of the District into 11 Development Blocks. Dy. Development Commissioner, Chief Development Officer and the District Development Officer are responsible for the overall development of the Division and the District.  They have many officers / Project Directors to assist them.  Each Block Development Officer is assisted by ADO (Panchayat), ADO (Agriculture), ADO (Cooperative), ADO (Statistics), ADO (Social Welfare), ADO (Plant Protection), JE (Minor Irrigation), JE (Rural Engg. Services).  बहु उद्देश्य कर्मी are supposed to implement the govt. schemes at Gram Panchayat level.  If these many officers would have sincerely worked for the upliftment of the area under their jurisdiction, an entirely different picture would have been available for us to see, admire and feel proud of.

City Kotwali, Kotwali Dehat, Thana Mandi, Kutubsher Chowki, Thana Janakpuri, Thana Sadar.  Outside Saharanpur municipal area,  we have Police Stations at  Gagalheri, Rampur, Nakur, Titron, Nanauta, Chilkana, Mirzapur, Sarsawa, Deoband, Gangoh, Fatehpur, Biharigarh, Badgaon, Nagal, Behat and Ambehata.

There are 21 police stations in Saharanpur which are supposed to take care of Law and Order in the District.  For various Tehsil, a police officer of the rank of C.O. is stationed.  Thus we have CO City 1, CO City 2, CO Sadar, CO Behat, CO Nakur, CO Deoband, CO Rampur who have got DIG, SSP, ASP City, ASP Rural as their superiors.  In Saharanpur city itself, we have several police stations -   RPF, GRP, PAC have their specific roles in maintaining law and order.

 Railway Line

136 Km. (B.G.)

Saharanpur happens to be on major rail routes of India e.g. Mumbai - Amritsar, Howrah - Amritsar, New Delhi - Jammu Tavi.  These broad guage rail routes pass through Saharanpur - making it a major rail junction.  Saharanpur Delhi Branch line also is a broad guage line.

Post Offices

Urban  - 23
Rural - 185

Post offices have less and less role to play in delivery of letters and packets / parcels since a substantial part of their business has been transferred to private courier services. As per Post Office Act, delivery of letters is a monopoly service entrusted to Post Offices but illegal or not, the private courier services are being given more and more letters for delivery - at least by the businessmen in city areas.  However, Post Offices also act as bankers - offering various savings schemes to the general public.  People are tempted to keep their savings with the post offices because the govt. has offered benefits of Income Tax exemptions under Section 80 C etc.
