Saharanpur has got a good number of Degree colleges, higher secondary schools affiliated to one or the other Board of Education, primary schools, vocational training institutions and institutions providing religious education. The degree and post graduate colleges are affiliated to Ch. Charan Singh University i.e. Meerut University but efforts are on to have an state university in Saharanpur itself. In the city of Saharanpur, we have got three post graduate colleges - J.V. Jain (PG) College, Maharaj Singh College and Munnalal Jai Narayan Khemka Girls Degree College, Saharanpur - the last one meant for girls only. There are a large number of good Higher Secondary schools (10+2) in Saharanpur affiliated to either CBSE or ICSE. Most of them are owned and managed by some members of public forming a managing committee, one or the other institution, trusts, religious bodies etc. Rainbow School, St. Mary's Academy, Asha Modern School, Infant Jesus, Lord Mahavira Academy, DAV Public School, Pinewood School, St. Thomas School are some of them. There has been a recent tendency to add the word "International" in the school's name to suggest that the school has got international standard of infra-structure and/or pattern of education. So, we have Gyankalash International School, Asha Modern International School, Bajaj International School also in Saharanpur. Delhi Public School, to encash the good name it achieved in Delhi for providing quality education and maintaining a certain standard has started to lend its name to the institutions being opened in other cities too. So, we have got a Delhi Public School in Saharanpur also. A very large number of Intermediate Colleges (10+2) affiliated to U.P. Madhyamik Shiksha Board, Allahabad exist in Saharanpur. These are Hindi medium schools and among them, two are noteworthy for maintaining high standards - one is SPM Saraswati Vidya Mandir (Baba Laldas Road) and another one is Sophia Hindi Medium (girls school). The discipline, dedication of teachers and students to the studies and the overall management of the other institutions in this category are less than ideal. They are considered poor men's schools. Condition of girls schools is much better than boys schools. Saharanpur has got a distinguished place in the world in matters of Islamic religious education. While we have Madarsa Mazahir-uloom in the city itself, its big brother - the majestic Darul - uloom is in Deoband Tehsil of District Saharanpur which is renowned globally for its fatwa's. There is a Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya also in Saharanpur which offers degree level courses to those who wish to pursue higher education in Sanskrit. A bewildering number of vocational training centres, franchisee, distance education centres, study centres have been opening up in Saharanpur in the recent past. Degrees of MBA, BBA, M.Sc. (I.T.), MCA, BCA and various other degree / diploma and Certificate courses are being provided by some of these study centres who don't have more than a room and two-three members in their faculty. There are large hoardings on every street of Saharanpur inviting students and promising them everything under the sky. However, fortunately for the students and their parents, some really good and large institutions with large campus and other needed infra-structure have also started opening up where quality education can be expected. One can only hope that the students will soon appreciate the difference and will make their choice intelligently. I.T.I. is the government owned and managed vocational training institute in Saharanpur which was here even in those days when no other vocational training facility was available in Saharanpur. Last, but definitely not the least is the Indian Institute of Tehnology (I.I.T.), Roorkee which has got its presence through its DEPARTMENT OF PULP & PAPER TECHNOLOGY. It is just a little consolation for Saharanpur because Roorkee and Hardwar were integral part of Saharanpur District till a few decades ago. Very soon, Saharanpur is going to have its own Medical College to
provide education in modern medicine at Pilkhani, Ambala Road,
Saharanpur. The building of Manyavar Kanshi Ram Institute of
Medical Sciences, Saharanpur is under construction and the first
batch of MBBS students may start in 2011.
