Babu Maharaj Singh Ji -  An institution in himself

Babu Maharaj Singh was born on 5th June 1890 in Gangoh, Saharanpur. His father Lala Bool Chand Ji was a well known landlord of his area. After completing elementary education he did his LL.B. in 1915 and started law practice in Saharanpur and was soon rated among the top lawyers of this geographical region. In those date of late twenties, buying a car was a self-evident indication of financial success of a person. However, this professional and financial success could not take Babu Maharaj Singh away from his spiritual mindset.

Despite his top rated professional career, Babu Maharaj Singh much of his time and energy in social and spiritual upliftment of the society and this diversion came in 1957 when he gave away law practice and chose to devote himself fully in social work and spiritualism.

In those days, Saharanpur had no college for higher education in science stream and the students of the district Saharanpur had to migrate to other cities in order to achieve graduation and post graduation in science. It were the Herculian efforts by Babu Maharaj Singh in pooling up financial resources for a science college and he started these efforts by donating almost all of his property for an institution of his dreams - Maharaj Singh College. As Chairman of the managing committee of the college, he remained very active for three years to ensure all round progress of this institution in its infancy. It was due to his great efforts that Arts and Science PG faculty were soon available to the college. Right from the begining, the college carved a niche for itself as an ideal place to receive higher education.

As if it was not enough, Babu Maharaj Singh took up another challange to set up a charitable hospital in the city and his dream materialised in 1967 and again, Babu Maharaj Singh donated his remaining property for this great philanthropic cause and his departed soul must be feeling contentment that this charitable hospital is serving the ailing humanity - especially the less fortunate segments of the society.

After delegating control of both of these institutions in able hands, Babu Maharaj Singh Ji delved deep in spiritual quests and even wrote three books - Geeta Bodh, Adhyatma and Ramayan Bodh.

Both the instituion - M.S. College which provides higher education in science and arts streams and has achieved great heights, and Maharaj Singh Charitable Hospital are two great gifts to Saharanpur from Babu Maharaj Singh who ceased to exist in this material world on 22 January 1978 but remains in the hearts of the people of Saharanpur for ever. The tree will continue to offer the fruits of education to the student community for all times to come.
